This day is called Asalha Puja, and is one of the three traditional Theravada Buddhist special days in the calendar. It marks the beginning of Vassa – the annual "Reains Retreat" – which officially begins the following day. The Dhammacakkhapavattana Sutta is often recited on this day, to commemorate the first teaching of the Buddha to his five disciples in the Deer Park at Sarnath.
At Temple, a Dhamma Talk will be offered after the Evening Puja, and there may be a traditional outdoor circumambulation afterwards for anyone who wishes to participate.
